Cashless Payments from May 1 2026: QR Payments and Preventive Inspections by the Financial Administration
As we informed you in the previous edition of our newsletter on March 20 2026, from May 1 2026, sellers are required to enable customers to make cashless payments for transactions exceeding EUR 1. In addition to this obligation, it also presents an opportunity to streamline payment processes.
A practical solution is, for example, payment via a QR code, without the need for a payment terminal.
The QR payment process works as follows: the merchant generates a unique QR code containing the payment details at the checkout, the customer scans the code using their mobile banking application, the payment details are filled in automatically, and the customer confirms the payment.
The payment is processed within a matter of seconds, with both the merchant and the customer receiving immediate confirmation that the transaction has been successfully completed.
The system includes the largest banks on the market—VÚB, Slovenská sporiteľňa, Tatra banka, ČSOB, and Prima banka—which provide payment receipt notifications directly to the eKasa system.
Preventive Inspections by the Financial Administration
Following the introduction of the obligation to offer cashless payment options, the Financial Administration has launched a preventive inspection campaign. The objective of the inspection campaign is to verify whether the new rules have been properly implemented in practice. Inspectors focus on verifying whether the following are in place at the point of sale:
- a cash register is installed
- cashless payment options are available
- a notice informing customers of the obligation to record sales and issue a fiscal receipt is visibly displayed.
The inspections are primarily focused on high-risk sectors, including construction, personal care services, hospitality and food services, accommodation providers, and medical practices.
We therefore recommend that you review your current setup in a timely manner and ensure compliance with the new requirements, particularly in light of the ongoing preventive inspections being carried out by the Financial Administration.
