Regions of the Future: Why Košice Is Worth Watching Today and What Can Inspire Banská Bystrica
Košice: A Region Shaping the Future Today
Slovakia will be only as strong as its regions. That is why it is interesting to look at the stories of two regional capitals – Košice and Banská Bystrica. Although both regions benefit from strong universities, a rich entrepreneurial tradition, and talented people, their development has taken different paths in recent years.
Košice is no longer a “region of the future” – the future is being created here today. The city has gradually transformed from an economy primarily dependent on the steel industry into an ecosystem built on three pillars: industry, the IT sector, and new investments.
IT Valley and New Investments as Drivers of Growth
The development of IT Valley has played a significant role by bringing together businesses, educational institutions, and local government. As a result, the region is now home to more than 15,000 IT professionals and has created an environment capable of attracting both talent and investment capital.
Another major boost will come from Volvo’s new manufacturing plant in Valaliky, which, together with its supplier network, is expected to create thousands of jobs.
Strong Regions Are Built on Strong Companies
However, major investments alone are not enough. Local companies and ambitious small and medium-sized enterprises are also a vital part of this growth, gradually evolving from regional players into internationally successful businesses.
This is precisely where TPA Slovakia plays an active role. In Košice, we focus on supporting growing businesses through modern financial management, process automation, data-driven reporting, and assistance in securing investment and financing. We believe that the long-term development of regions depends on strong local businesses, not solely on one-off investment impulses.
Banská Bystrica in Search of Its Growth Engine
On the other hand, the Banská Bystrica region has a rich entrepreneurial history and significant potential, yet it is still searching for its key driver of growth. The region faces challenges such as talent outflow, weaker transport connectivity, and the absence of a major investor capable of creating a broader business ecosystem.
However, investments in infrastructure, a regional innovation strategy, and efforts to strengthen cooperation between universities, local governments, and the business community are all positive signs for the region’s future development.
What Can Regions Learn from the Košice Success Story?
The story of Košice demonstrates that regional transformation is possible when there is a long-term vision, strong collaboration, and the ability to connect education, business, and innovation. People, strong businesses, and effective partnerships are the foundation of a competitive region—whether in eastern Slovakia or in the heart of the country.
